DEPRESSION

Hi there!

Today i would be talking about a serious issue common in our society today, DEPRESSION.

Depression has really become a rampant issue in the society today, it cuts through all ages, tribe and different races. According to the american psychiatric association, depression was defined as a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act..... A general feeling of worthlessness, loss of interest, feeling sad or having a depressed mood could be symptoms of depression....

Most people confuse bereavement, sadness or grief for depression, which is totally wrong.

The death of a loved one, ending of a relationship or loss of properties are experiencing difficult for a person to endure.....You go through stages of sadness, mixed feelings perhaps remorse. At that point in time, you refer to yourself as being depressed which  is absolutely wrong, being sad is not the same as having depression...

Depression affects your self-esteem but being sad about losing a loved one doesn't affect your self-esteem, you might be down for weeks or perhaps months, you get over it, the range differs in different people.

It can affect anyone—even a person who appears to live in relatively ideal circumstances. A person whom you see with all smiles every day or living a comfortable life might be facing depression...Just few weeks ago Harrysong a popular celebrity and songwriter in Nigeria tweeted and I quote"Don't cry when I die, celebrate, put up a kingmaker concert, empower more youths. I have lived, I have done my bit, carry on in grace....TEKERO, I LOVE YOU ALL" these tweets were reciprocated with mixed feelings, fans took to his page to advise, lambaste and show affection to him.

Despite the status, achievement, and feat he has attained, he was suffering from depression. It is no respecter of persons...In fact, the person very close to you might be suffering from depression without your knowledge.

Few days ago, Harrysong took to his page again to tweet and I quote"Thank you so much, guys. My session with Miss Alabi (who happens to be his psychologist) went well and I am gradually getting my feet back. Always show love and be kind to people. Depression is a silent killer, learn to unburden your mind to trusted ones". which implies he spoke to someone who greatly is helping him overcome depression.

Several factors can play a role in depression:

Biochemistry: Differences in certain chemicals in the brain may contribute to symptoms of depression.
Genetics: Depression can run in families. For example, if one identical twin has depression, the other has a 70 percent chance of having the illness sometimes in life.
Personality: People with low self-esteem, who are easily overwhelmed by stress, or who are generally pessimistic appear to be more likely to experience depression.
Environmental factors: Continuous exposure to violence, neglect, abuse or poverty may make some people more vulnerable to depression.
So you see sometimes depression may be hereditary or societal induced.

There are many treatments of depression but the commonly used treatment is called "PSYCHOTHERAPY"

This involves having sessions with a psychologist or therapist where you get to talk about issues that might be the major cause of depression for you or probably talking to a trusted person about what possible causes you think might be the cause of your depression.

Reach out to people close to you, it could be your spouse, relatives or friends who you notice seems withdrawn to themselves. Show concern, today.

You could save a life.
